Dr. Tim Forman (BA MSc PhD) is a Research Associate at the Centre for Sustainable Development in the Department of Engineering.

Biography:

Tim’s research, teaching and professional background relates to the design, construction and renovation of buildings and to improving sustainability and resilience in the built environment under current and future climate conditions.

Tim holds a PhD and an MSc in ‘Theory and Practice of Sustainable Design’ from the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University.  He earned his BA with a focus in architectural theory and sustainability from Hampshire College (USA).  His academic background includes design, building science, sustainability theory, and socio-technical analysis.  Outside of academic training, he has broad experience working in construction using conventional as well as low-cost and low-impact approaches.

Tim’s research has addressed technical, social and policy challenges related to energy demand reduction in existing buildings.  His current work is focused on assessment and reduction of unintended consequences in thermal insulation retrofit of solid masonry walls.  He is working in collaboration to develop novel building performance evaluation technology and assess hydrothermal modelling software.

Tim has led and supported teaching of a range of topics in architecture and engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  This has included: energy performance, resource flows, retrofit, sustainable conservation of historic structures, advanced building management, building information modelling, and policy analysis.  He has presented to numerous industry and policymaker audiences and is a regular participant in debate and public-academic forums.  He is a member of the UK Centre for Moisture in Buildings and serves on its technical working group for retrofit.  He is also a member of the Edge think tank and of the Association of Researchers in Construction Management.
